Journeys to Europe for refugees and migrants remained fraught with danger in 2017. More than 3,000 people lost their lives at sea while trying to cross the Mediterranean last year. Many more are thought to have died in Libya and along the desert routes. In Libya, refugees and migrants are suffering abuses at the hands of traffickers, smugglers or armed groups. Many of them are being detained for several months, tortured to extract a ransom, or have fallen victim to forced labour or sexual violence. In line with the commitments made by the Joint African Union-European Union-United Nations Task Force in Abidjan in 2017, UNHCR has significantly scaled up the search for solutions, including humanitarian evacuation and resettlement of refugees from Libya. So far and at a rapid pace, over 1,020 refugees have been evacuated from Libya to Niger, but much more needs to be done.
