Over the last few weeks, a series of crises have hit Iran and the Gulf states. Iran is one of the countries hardest hit by COVID-19, in part due to its already fragile health sector, but also due to the impact of US sanctions. They have weakened the economy to such an extent that Iran is inadequately prepared to deal with the crisis. Meanwhile, the Arab Gulf States are, not only dealing with the impact of COVID-19, but also the oil price crisis between Saudi Arabia and Russia. Some countries are shutting down crucial segments of their economy in the attempt to contain the spread of the virus and some are politicising the health emergency. These developments risk further exacerbating the already fragile regional security situation the region.

At this on-line Policy Briefing, Adnan Tabatabi and Christian Koch will offer their insights on developments in Iran and the Gulf region, the implications and challenges going forward, and what the EU could be doing now, despite the challenges it also faces from COVID-19.
