On 15 May 2023, the European Policy Centre hosted an in-person high-level Policy Dialogue with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell.
Drawing from his latest book, “
The year that war returned to Europe. EU foreign policy in 2022”, Mr Borrell reflected on the achievements and challenges of the EU’s foreign policy in the current geopolitical context.
In the discussion, Josep Borrell left us with one key question which guides the EPC’s work:
“Behind the scenes, there was always the idea that the European Union … was a force of peace in the world. Now the big question: Is this machinery, the way it works, still pertinent to face the challenges of the world today, or do we need a breakthrough - as we did with the Monetary Union - in order to be more able to address the challenges that we will have to face?”
“This is going beyond the everyday crisis, coup d’état and killing. We need to think deeper of the structures that Europeans need in order to survive in a challenging world.”
