This online EPC Update will analyse what we have learned since the summer about the second von der Leyen Commission (VDL 2), the inter-institutional balance within the EU and EUrope’s ability to deal with the economic and (geo-)political challenges posed by Donald Trump’s election victory.
What have the hearings taught us about the Commission’s future policy orientations and the composition and quality of the new college? How might VDL 2 work in practice, and will this be similar to or different from the past five years? How will recent battles between mainstream parties in the European Parliament affect its work, cooperation among pro-EUropean forces, and the overall inter-institutional balance in this new EU cycle? What impact might António Costa’s arrival as European Council President have? Will the Union’s new institutional configuration be strong enough to deal with the severe consequences of Trump 2.0 and what do recent developments in the US tell us about what the new administration might mean for EUrope?
Participation is open to EPC members only, the media and EU officials.
