Policy Dialogue
Disruptive Technologies Series - Beyond the hype: Artificial intelligence

EVENT
Tuesday, 06 November 2018

This European Policy Centre’s Disruptive Technologies Series, supported by Dell, aims to make sense of emerging technologies, their impacts for business and society, and how the EU policy framework can best build on the potential and address the challenges.

A lot has been written and said about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it is changing, shaping or disrupting our way of life. Some see it as a great opportunity, others are afraid of the implications, for example, for employment. Whilst some argue that it will take much more time for AI to radically affect people’s lives, others claim that digital disruption is already here, with AI technologies in smartphones, smart cars, healthcare, financial services, retail and manufacturing. This first event in the series went “beyond the hype” of AI, and assessed current developments, as well as future perspectives. What is AI exactly, and what is it not? What implications could AI have for Europe’s competitiveness, the economy and the future of work? What are the fears around AI and how should these be addressed? What should the EU policy framework on AI look like?

Speakers included: Annika Hedberg, Senior Policy Analyst, European Policy Centre, Nancy Rademaker, Partner & Professional keynote speaker, nexxworks, Donagh Buckley, Senior Director, Dell EMC Research Europe, Michel Servoz, Senior Adviser for Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Future of European Labour Law, European Political Strategy Centre, European Commission.
