The European Policy Centre (EPC), in partnership with Apple will host an online roundtable on the European Commission’s proposal for a Digital Markets Act and its potential impact on SMEs. This is the second event in our joint project: A fair and thriving EU digital ecosystem: Designing policies that increase EU growth and EU-US cooperation.
The Digital Markets Act (DMA) will spell out a wide range of obligations for large online platforms that qualify as gatekeepers. Increasing the responsibilities of larger platforms can encourage better safeguards and transparency for consumers and foster greater competition and growth in the Digital Single Market (DSM). But SMEs and app-developers are concerned that the obligations intended for gatekeepers in the DSM could also have a negative impact on them. This roundtable discussion will focus on the impact that DMA rules could have on the business models of SMEs seeking active in the EU’s DSM. The potential challenges for gatekeeper’s business models could have a ‘knock-on effect’ on the SME business model, opportunities to scale up, and the future of SMEs in the Digital Single Market.
The discussion will take place under the Chatham House rule.
