The transatlantic partnership is an enduring one, founded on shared values, extensive, unparalleled economic interconnections and a fundamental convergence of strategic interests. In many ways, the EU and the US are natural partners. Over seven decades, the transatlantic partners have sometimes disagreed, but the critical importance of the partnership has never been challenged. The strength of the relationship has been tested recently with the EU and the US finding themselves on opposite sides of the argument on important dossiers such as Iran and the Paris agreement on climate change. Europeans are worried about the evolving US approach to multilateral cooperation, including, for example, the future of the WTO. Are these differences the symptoms of a widening divide across the Atlantic or areas of disagreement that need addressing but do not affect the fundamentals of the partnership?
