Migration
Sharing responsibility for refugees: What way forward?

EVENT
Tuesday, 18 December 2018

The need to distribute the responsibility over asylum seekers and refugees more evenly between member states has become more urgent as the pressure on asylum systems increased in recent years. Despite this, the reform of the Common European Asylum System remains at a standstill. The absence of a responsibility-sharing mechanism compromises both the reception conditions for asylum seekers and the principles of solidarity and sincere cooperation that underpin the European project. Taking stock of the current state of affairs on responsibility-sharing discussions, participants of this Roundtable explored possible solutions to overcome the current deadlock.
Speakers included: Marie De Somer, Senior Policy Analyst, European Policy Centre, Martin Wagner, Programme Manager, International Centre for Migration Policy Development, Răducu-Cătălin Burlacu, JHA Counsellor for Asylum and Migration, Permanent Representation of Romania to the EU, Anna Lübbe, Mercator Senior Fellow and Professor of Public Law, Fulda University of Applied Sciences.
